My athletic dog is too thin. How can I help her gain healthy weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed

My dog loves to work and is very athletic however that also means she always looks a little thin. I tried out different feeds, with different protein sources (and increased feed amount) but I can't get a proper look to her. What else can I try to add some weight on her?

Thin is good. As long as she has a shiny coat, plenty of energy and her ribs can be felt but are not showing she’s fine. Blue Buffalo food is very high in calories so you may want to try that. Also adding in another meal may help as often dogs don’t want to eat a large amount at each meal. Having her spayed and limiting her exercise will both generally add weight to a thin dog.
