My neutered Chihuahua acts terrified with anal pain. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Since having my 5 yo male Chihuahua neutered, he is constantly acting like he's in serious pain near his anus, and acts though he's trying to run away from his pain. He acts utterly terrified?? His surgery was done about six mo. ago. He also had his glands pressed 2wks. ago with no abnormal findings. Plz help ASAP!

Hello. It would be very unusual to have rectal pain following a neuter surgery. If your veterinarian is sure there are no anal gland issues, & his prostate feels normal, then my next step would be an x-ray to rule out any skeletal abnormalities in his lower back/tail area & pass a urinary catheter to rule out a blockage/narrowing of the urethra & collect a urine sample. Perhaps this will shed some information as to why Cletus has been so uncomfortable. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
