My male cat won't stop peeing everywhere. What else can I try?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

Male cat in a home with 2 females, all siblings, won't stop marking & peeing everywhere. he does use the little box sometimes, but it definitely looks deliberate when it's anywhere else. he's had vet-prescribed antibiotics & steroids for this & it's cut it down, but it's never stopped. it's not in 1 specific area of the house, it's not near any 1 person. it's near windows but also in rooms across the house & on different floors. i've tried calming treats & a plug-in. Any other suggestions?

I'm so sorry you are having this problems with Stevie. I know how frustrating it can be. There are a large number of reasons that a cat will inappropriately urinate (urinate outside the litter box). I am attaching a handout below which discusses this in detail. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=633 The first step in figuring out why a cat is urinating outside the litter box is to have your veterinarian do an examination and get a urine sample to evaluate for a medical reason. It sounds like you have already done that. If they found any abnormalities, you need to make sure that those have resolved. Once the urine sample is normal, then we need to look at other possibilities. The handout above discusses litter box issues that can play a role. If you have 3 cats then the "correct" number of litter boxes is 4 (the number of cats plus 1). It sounds like overkill, but it can make s huge difference. Make sure to look at any other factors involving the litter box as well (uncovered, no liner, quiet location, etc). Here is another handout with some specific litter box guidelines. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=3638 If your veterinarian cannot find a medical reason and all litter box issues have been dealt with, then it may be time to discuss medication with your veterinarian. Medications are also discussed in the first handout. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that you can figure out why Stevie is urinating inappropriately. Thanks for using PetCoach.
