My new puppy has rice-like segments in her fur and poop. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 23 days old

I just purchased a puppy (Shih Tzu/Yorkie Mix) and we noticed this in her fur and in her poop. We are wondering what it is. It isn't a mucus consistency and it doesn't look or feel like any type of worm.

Congratulations on the new puppy! Unfortunately, it looks like Umi might have tapeworms which shed little “rice grain” looking segments. Take her (and a fecal sample) into your local vet to confirm and get a prescription for a dewormer that will work for that type of worm.
