Why is my Dachshund losing hair in patches? Could it be alopecia?

My Dachshund has been balled on the sides of his head and a bit on the tops of his ears for a while now. He also barely has any hair in his genital area and some white hair on his neck. What could be the problem he has? Is it a kind of Alopecia? Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 4.5 lbs

Alopecia means hair loss or absence of hair. There can be several possible causes. Low thyroid function is one of the most common causes in mid aged dogs. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They will likely recommend lab work to help with the diagnosis.
