My cat refuses prescription kidney food. Can I try non-prescription urinary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 18 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs

My cat does not like the prescription renal dry food. I was told by somebody that I can buy the urinary tract dry food which is not prescription. Is that correct?

Urinary tract food is formulated for a very different disease process then renal failure. There are many different brands of renal diets, so if she didn’t like the first one I would attempt another. A very slow transition can be helpful. My favorite is Purina NF, I feel that cats tend to like it better than others. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
