My senior dog has a soft, squishy lump on her side. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mastiff | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 130 lbs

Hey, while Sissy was eating I noticed she had a big thing, not like a lump, coming out from her side. She’s almost 7 and an English Mastiff. It’s not on the other side and it’s not hard.

Hello, sorry to hear about Sissy. Most soft masses could be consistent with fatty tumors. However, the only way to differentiate aggressive tumors from fatty tumors is by obtaining a sample either through a fine needle aspirate or through a biopsy. This can be done by your veterinarian. Most fatty tumors (lipomas) can be removed if needed due to size or cosmetic reasons. Otherwise, they are benign and could be monitored if decided to not remove. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian to sample this tumor and decide wether its benign or malignant. Hope this helps and best of luck.
