How long does it take for a dog's ear hematoma to heal naturally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 6 years old | 80 lbs

My dog is suffering from hematoma from past 8 days and initially we have opted to give him medicines as suggested by our vet but I wanted to know that whether it will heal on its own? How many days it usually take to heal this?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If left untreated and not drained, hematomas can take quite a while (months) to resolve. The larger the hematoma is the longer it will take to resolve on its own. I generally remove the fluid from the ear flap and then inject a steroid into the ear flap. I have had a pretty good success rate using this method with a handful of cases needing repeat treatments. If you would like this to resolve sooner, I would recommend having the minor procedure done to remove the fluid from the ear flap. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
