My vaccinated cat foamed at mouth then stopped. Is it rabies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Almost 2 weeks ago, my cat was bitten by an animal and treated at a vet. While he's had his rabies vaccine, the vet advised us it isn't 100% effective. Three days ago he came in from being outside and began significantly foaming at the mouth for about thirty minutes. He seemed fine otherwise and has acted completely normal since. Should we be concerned?

While no vaccination is 100% effective, it is unlikely that what you are seeing is Rabies if the symptoms resolved. Once the foaming at the mouth has begun the symptoms of Rabies usually progress from there. If he is now acting normal, I would continue to monitor him for the time being. He may have come in contact with something orally that caused him to foam at the mouth. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further! If the symptoms persist, I would recommend having a veterinarian recheck him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
