My cat has entropion. Is surgery necessary? How will he recover?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 10.8 lbs

My cat has had a very lingering case of watery and swollen eyelids. All the medications on his eye fail as soon as they are stopped after their due time. The vet suspects a case of entropion, which he will confirm in a day or two. At that point, a surgery would be necessary. I'm very concerned about him. He's never had a surgery before. Is there any other thing that can be done? How well would he cope with stitches around his eye and can it be delayed for now?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This surgery is generally well tolerated but he will have to wear a cone around his neck for at least 14-21 days so that he does not scratch out the stitches. The longer you delay the surgical correction of the procedure, the more risk you run of the entropion causing trauma to the surface of the eye from the eyelid hairs scraping against the cornea. I would recommend having it done sooner rather than later so that you can prevent this from happening. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
