Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Food Grade DE can be used as a natural form of parasite control. It may not be as effective or as fast acting as some prescription medications though. It can be applied directly to the pet. It can also be sprinkled around the environment, left for several hours to days then swept up or vacuumed. This must be repeated weekly or more frequently to maintain effectiveness. It works best in arid (dry) environments. It pierces the exoskeleton of parasites which "dries" them out causing death. Try not to breathe in the dust yourself and know that DE can be very hard on vacuum cleaner filters and motors.
