My dog keeps sneezing and has a stuffy nose. Could it be allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

My dog is sneezing repeatedly, and sounds very congested. The congestion is not coming from her lungs or chest, just her snout. Her nose is not running. She is just sneezing, and has a stuffy nose. What could this be? Allergies?

Poor Chovie! This certainly could be allergies, a fungal infection, something stuck in her nose, or an upper respiratory infection. You could try Benadryl twice a day. See link below. If she isn’t improving, i would have your your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to start her on the proper meds like antibiotics or stronger allergy meds if needed to help her feel better. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. It is difficult to say for sure what the cause is. There are many things that could cause this from a foreign object in the nose, sinus / nasal infection, nasal tumor, fungal infection, allergies, etc. For allergies, I recommend to my clients using Benadryl and seeing if a trial of this helps with the symptoms. Please visit the following link for more information on the use of Benadryl ( https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/ ). If the congestion / reverse sneezing continue, I would recommend having Lala examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
