Why is my cat peeing on the bed? Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Female | spayed | 5 months and 23 days old | 11.3 lbs

I think my cat has separate anxiety, she usually meows whenever I leave the room but she did something new when I was at work today she peed on my bed is that a symptom of it or maybe something else? It’s the first time she has ever done that and should I make her a appointment at the vet to see if she has separation anxiety she’s been meowing when I leave for awhile now. I’m just worried. Please help. Thank you!

Hello, and thank you for your question. Luna is a beautiful cat. Peeing on the bed may be a sign of stress, or it could be a medical condition such as a urinary tract infection or urinary crystals. Common causes of stress may be related to her litter box (e.g. not cleaned daily, doesn't like the change in litter type, doesn't like the location of the litter), or from something else in the environment, such as loud noises, other pets, or even separation anxiety as you suggested. I would definitely start by getting her checked at the vet, to rule out a medical issue. They will likely recommend to check a urine sample for bacteria, crystals, blood, etc. If the urine sample comes back clean, then the vet can help you pinpoint any causes of stress in her life and find the appropriate remedies. In the meantime, I would restrict access to your bedroom so that she cannot pee there again. If that's not possible, you can try putting a plastic sheet on the bed, and of course wash the bedding thoroughly so any smell of her urine is erased (any lingering smells could attract her back to do it again!). You can also look into a product called Feliway, which is a natural pheromone spray designed to help reduce inappropriate urination in cats. I hope this helps, and that Luna is feeling better soon!
