What to do for my senior cat's irritated eye discharge at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

My 15 year old cat named Brittany is having a problem with an eye that I just noticed 2 days ago. It looks to me like where the darker part right at the inside corner has something abnormal coming out or is just darker in that area. She won’t let me touch the exact area and looks irritated. I just went to the vet for my other cat and don’t get paid for another 2 weeks so the vet isn’t an option. Can you help me please or tell me what I can do? Please & thank you

She is a beauty! It is difficult for me to say for sure without doing an exam of my own. It looks Ike she is having some eye discharge from the inside corners of her eyes. This can be a normal discharge and can increase with changing of the seasons. You can try Benadryl twice a day as This may help. See link below. If the discharge even becomes green or yellow or she is squinting her eyes, then I would have your vet look at it as it could be something more serious. If you are talking about her third eyelid coming up, this could also be due to eye irritation, allergies, or even something more serious like a corneal ulcer. You can try the Benadryl and flushing her eye with some artificial tear drops, but if it isn’t improving I would have a vet look at her when you can. If you weren’t talking about either one of these things, can you please write back in the forum with more details? Thank you so much and I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/cat/benadryl/
