My cat has trouble eating and drools. Why does it recur after meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Kitty (stray 4.5yearold cat) has trouble eating and drools.Problem started in January2017. Seems like she has trouble swallowing.Gave her a course of Amoxicillin Trihydrate a few months ago; condition immediately improved, but a few weeks later gradually got worse again. Then vet prescribed Caricef; again condition improved but then deteriorated within weeks. Is there any way to stop the recurrence and improve her eating/swallowing problem?Any med that would help? Can't be taken to vet for checkup.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Kitty improved while on the meds but the problems returned after they finished, there might be a problem with her teeth. If the teeth are painful it could cause a problem with eating and drooling. Sometimes these problems are not seen on the surface of the teeth and gums, but with the help of dental X-rays a problem under the surface may be found. She needs to go under anesthesia for this and during that time the vet can look for any other problems in the mouth. Good luck and kisses to Kitty!
