My dog's skin is warm to the touch and he is scratching a lot. I have him on a regular dose of allergy medicine 2x a day but hasn't helped in a week.

Have Ruger examined by your veterinarian to diagnose skin infection. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets and food elimination trials with your vet. A steroid may be needed to relieve the itching after which an antihistamine can be used to prevent its return. Some antihistamines work better I'm dogs than others, so you will need to find the best one for Ruger. Apoquel is a newer medication that has been successful in treating allergies in dogs. In the morning, a colloidal oatmeal bath may soothe itchy skin. Bathe Ruger in cool water and pat him dry afterwards. Don't rub, that can make the itch worse. Use an e-collar, booties or a tee shirt to prevent injury from excessive scratching, licking or chewing.
