My senior cat cries loudly at night. Is this feline cognitive decline?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 15 years and 10 months old | 24 lbs

I have a 15 year old cat who has been obese since age 2. She has been on diet food, and I accept her being a big girl. She seems to have developed Alzheimer’s... She announces with loud cries when she takes a nap or goes to bed. Lately, she is louder and carries on longer. But if I talk to her and say I hear you, it’s okay, go to sleep- she stops. Does this sound like Alzheimer’s?

With advancing age comes many complications and disorders. Cognitive dysfunction syndrome is one such condition that is directly related to the aging of a cat's brain; it ultimately leads to changes in awareness, deficits in learning and memory, and decreased responsiveness to stimuli. Although the initial symptoms of the disorder are mild, they gradually worsen over time, also known as “cognitive decline.” the symptoms you are describing definitely seem to fit dementia.
