My cat is overeating due to stress. How can I help her lose weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 9 years and 2 months old

Hi, I have recently left my cat with a parent for college. I have been told she has been excessively eating and gaining weight. I’m sure this is because of me being away and having a new environment. I am visiting for a week and I would please like to know any tips or things that can do now and later on when she is living with me to get her to lose weight and still be healthy?

Poor Pearl. I'm sure she misses you. Cats commonly overeat when they are bored. If she is used to having you around, she may just be eating because she is bored. Unfortunately, we can't tell cats to stop eating when they are full, so we will have to measure her food to ensure weight loss. I typically recommend 2-3 meals a day for cats because that works best for most people's schedule, but cats like many small meals throughout the day. I would recommend measuring her total amount of food for the day, then dividing it into something like feeding balls or a no bowl feeding system. https://docandphoebe.com https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/petsafe-slimcat-cat-food-dispenser-in-blue?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&adpos=1o1&scid=scplp1183494&sc_intid=1183494&cm_mmc=PLA-GG-_-PTC_P_SUP_PLA-GG_FY17_SCShopping-Desktop-_-Non+VIP-_-92700027158513260&kwid=p27158513260&device=t&gclid=Cj0KCQiAus_QBRDgARIsAIRGNGhGxse1-txTHLq22N6VP3TzLgJAgOxhYhwizu4jtOp1hiiIXsRu-wsaAs9bEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds I have also had good luck transitioning cats from dry to canned food for weight loss. Finally, if there are any other clinical signs or if she is not losing weight as expected, be sure to have your veterinarian examine her and possibly check bloodwork for any underlying health concerns. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
