My old dog's seizures are severe, and meds don't work. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 33 lbs

Phenobarbital, potassium bromide, and valium have done nothing for my dog's seizures. My vet believes she has epilepsy; he is wrong. She is 12 years old and had the first seizure in August 2017. Why won't anyone listen? Why are all of you the same? Not everything you were taught in school is accurate. She is dying, and my vet and all of you have offered nothing. 50 + seizures in 12 hour period, COME ON!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear Scarlet has been having seizures. While epilepsy is possible as the cause of her seizures, its typical age of onset is 6 months to 6 years old. At Scarlet's age, we would be concerned that there is a possible different underlying cause, such as a growth or mass in the brain, a toxin ingestion, liver disease or another underlying medical issue. Epilepsy is unfortunately a diagnosis of exclusion, and there is no test to determine that is the definitive cause. The various other causes can be tested for, however. If she is worsening and you are concerned, it may be worthwhile to contact a veterinary neurologist for a consult. They would be able to do a thorough examination, discuss possible options and even do an MRI if necessary to determine the cause of her seizures. If the combination of medications she is on is not controlling her seizures, there are additional medications (such as zonisamide or keppra) that may help as well. Good luck.
