Your dog may have eaten something that made him more thirsty than usual, he may have an upset stomach and the water may help calm his tummy down, or there could be a more serious issue that causes excessive drinking like a urinary tract infection, Cushing’s disease, and diabetes mellitus. To determine the cause of your dog’s excessive drinking I would recommend an examination by your veterinarian. Your vet may also recommend running some lab work to rule out some of the more serious metabolic diseases (like those mentioned above). I hope this helps. There can be many reasons for a dog to drink more than normal. It can be something simple like a urinary tract infection, but it can also be from Kidney issues, diabetes, cushings, etc. I would recommend testing Scrappy's urine and blood work to see what is going on with him.
