Is dog flea shampoo toxic to cats? What symptoms should I look for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

Hi, I washed a stray cat with dog flea and tick shampoo because she was suffering from being infested with them. Didn't know it was bad and after looking it up realized it could be harmful. She is acting completely fine, I have her inside, it's only been an hour tho. Should I be worried about it or are cases of something going wrong rare? I'm worried about her even tho she seems normal.

I would recommend washing her again with Dawn dish washing liquid to remove any residue of the shampoo and to try to strip it from the skin surface. Continue to monitor her for 24 hours. Look for excessive salivation, tremors or shaking all over, difficulty standing or seizures. If you see these, she should be taken to a veterinarian.
