My senior dogs are suddenly aggressive and fighting. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 15 years old | 42 lbs

We currently have 2 Dogs in our household. Tippy is 14 and Toby is 13. All of a sudden about 3 months ago Toby started to get a little aggressive towards Tippy. Its gotten to a point now where they can't be in the same room together. Once Toby sees Tippy he will start growling and showing his teeth. They get to the point where they are attacking each other on a regular basis. Toby has bitten both myself and my wife and we don't know what to do. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I would take him to a vet for an exam. Often times in older dogs, they can have aggression due to pain. This is often due to arthritis. Dogs can have cognitive dysfunction that can alter their behavior or a brain tumor. Your vet can check for anything signs that can help differentiate to see what your best options are for medicines
