My dog has hip pain. Could it be hip dysplasia? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 110 lbs

My dog is 4 years old, and is a German Shepherd, chocolate lab mix. He seems to be experiencing pain when he gets into the bed or stands up. I've been told that he may have hip dysplasia later in his life, from his foster family when I adopted him last year. Could this be causing the pain? The weather lately has been rainy, and otherwise nasty, so I thought maybe if dogs were like humans, he could just be sore because of the weather. I've given him some pain reliever, but what else should I do?

Yes, if he has abnormal hip development, the winter weather can aggravate him. There are many factors with can help manage symptoms including specialist mobility diets, chiropractic care, acupuncture, physiotherapy, prescription pain relief and magnetic therapy beds. A full assessment by your vet is recommended to rule out any additional injuries or causes also
