Is it safe for my 13-week-old puppy to get his first rabies shot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 28 days old | 22 lbs

We had a vet tech tell us today that my puppy was able to get his rabies shot today along with his 3rd puppy shot. He will be 13 weeks tomorrow. He got delayed a week on his first puppy shot because he had coccidia. is it really safe for him to get the rabies now or should I wait until 16 weeks? My states law is 4 months.

The Rabies requirements may be different in different states, but in general, the minimum age to get a Rabies is 12 weeks. Most veterinarians will wait and give the Rabies at 15-16 weeks with the last booster vaccines. If your pup is not at risk (doesn't live outside), I would suggest waiting until the last vaccine visit at 15-16 weeks, but it is not going to harm him if done a couple of weeks earlier.
