Why is my cat scooting his butt on the carpet? What does it mean?

What does it mean when a cat rubs/ scratches his rear in the carpet (He's male and every month or too he does it once or twice)

Usually they are trying to express their anal glands (scent glands that live just inside the rectum). If it is just occasionally then I wouldn’t be too worried, however if he is licking his rear end a lot, or the rubbing is frequent, or if you happen to see any blood then he should be seen by a veterinarian. Very occasionally anal sacs become infected or impacted in cats, but it is uncommon. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
