Why is my cat excessively grooming, itching, and losing fur?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 10 lbs

He is grooming and itching all the time. He started looking patches of fur but now has lost a lot if fur. I was told to try piriton which seems to help with the itching but is so hard to administer. I plan on taking him to vets again tomorrow but wondered your thoughts

Poor Jigsaw! I'm sorry to hear that he's having skin problems. There are a number of different things that can cause hair loss and excessive itching in cats. The most common possibilities would include allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so it's important to get a diagnosis first in order to know how to treat him. It's great that you already have a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow! Your veterinarian can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat him depending on what is found.
