Why do my senior dog's back legs hurt intermittently? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 34 lbs

My Schipperke is ten yrs old and for the last week and a half his back leg/legs seems to be bothering him. It seems to come and go. When I feel his legs to see where it hurts, I get no reaction. Then, at other times he wont jump on the couch to lay with me and doesnt want to make the stairs then the next day he seems to be fine. What do you recommend?

You are correct this can be from back pain or hip or knee arthritis. I recommend a veterinary exam and X-rays to determine if he has a bulging disc in his back, or if they see arthritic changes in his hips or knees. For back pain they may prescribe an anti inflammatory medication as well as a muscle relaxer and pain medication. I treat back pain also with laser and acupuncture. For arthritis they can prescribe a safe arthritis medication specifically for dogs. In addition I give an omega 3 supplement to reduce inflammation and a joint supplement. I would discourage any jumping as this can make the pain or back problem worse. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Jax.
