My puppy's spay incision has loose, saggy skin. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 months and 8 days old | 37 lbs

Hi, I may be fretting for no reason here! I had my 6 month old puppy spayed last week, she still has stitches in currently. I have noticed today (although it may have been like this the whole time) that the skin around the incision on her abdomen is somewhat loose and saggy, mostly noticeable when she is sitting or standing. Is this a normal thing after spaying or should I be concerned?

That wound looks absolutely fine ! I see what you mean about the stitches but the important is that the wound is coming together nicely ! There are some subcutaneous stitches which are holding the wound together, the ones that you see are the skin ones and they are sometimes loose in case the wound becomes swollen. Nothing to worry about.
