My puppy's bum smells awful, vet says he's fine. Is it anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 28 days old | 30 lbs

Our 12 week old Doberman has normal stools, we haven’t changed his diet, and seems fine...but his bum smells so foul. He rubs it all over the couch and the blanket, sometimes unintentionally, and it leaves a terrible odor. It smells infected to me but his parasite test from the vet came back normal. Please help. Thank you. Aubrei

Oh my....Ares is adorable! I'm sorry that he is leaving a nasty smell on everything! I am wondering if his anal glands are full. Dogs have glands at 4 and 8 o'clock if the rectum was a clock (I know kind of gross thought). They are supposed to empty when the dog defecates. Sometimes it gets too thick or too full to empty fully. A veterinarian can express those glands and check the color and consistency to see if he possibly has an infected anal gland. I hope getting them expressed will fix your smelly problem! Good luck! Thanks for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
