My dog has a puffy, fluid-filled ear. Can I drain it at home?

My dog has a puffy fluid filled ear love. I can't afford to take her to the vet right now. Can I just poke it with a sterile sewing needle and drain the fluid? We think it might have been caused by a possible spider bite.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would refrain from draining this yourself. What you are seeing is likely what we call an ear hematoma. This is usually caused when the ear flap hits something. I would make sure there is no sign of an ear infection that needs to be treated, otherwise, this will be a perpetual problem until the primary problem is addressed. If you drain this yourself at home, it will likely fill up again. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this for further treatment as there are techniques for preventing this from recurring. You could also introduce infection if done incorrectly. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.
