Is it safe to crush and mix my pet's tablet with other medicine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 90 lbs

My pet had got small injury over hip. Doctor has prescribed some medicines out of which one is powder and the other is a tablet. So what I do is I crush the tablet in powdered form and mix it with the other powder form medicine, Is it ok to do that ? Like mixing the tablets ?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach this morning. I would advise against crushing the tablet or mixing the two medications if not advised to do so by your veterinarian. It would be helpful to know the two medication that were given by your veterinarian so I could advise further, but in general, it is best to stick with the directions for the medications as they were prescribed by your veterinarian. Drugs can lose their efficacy if altered from the way they were intended to be administered or combined with other drugs at the same time. Thanks you for posting and good luck to you and Jenny!
