Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 10 days old
Today my pug pooped in the morning as usual but now in the afternoon she seemed not to poop as usual. Her poop was more like liquid and a little reddish. It seemed as if she was struggling to bring out the poop. There was also some whitish jelly like matter in the poop. Overall the poop was similar to when human's have dysentery except the color. She was like trying to poop everywhere to bring it out. Now she is soundly sleeping. What should i do? Is this due to indigestion? Thanks in advance.

There are so many things that can cause diarrhea and straining to defecate in dogs. There is no way for me to tell your for sure. The most common reasons for this in young dogs is internal parasites or a viral disease (ie: parvo). It could be due to dietary indiscretion if she ate something abnormal. I strongly recommend you get her to your vet for an exam. If she was an older dog my answer would be different. In puppies is not recommended to wait on diagnostics when having these issues even if they seem fine now. I am worried about the mucous and the reddish color to the stools. Please take her in for an exam and get the stool tested for parasites and her tested for parvo. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lola. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Straining to defecate with mucus and blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon. This can be due to an infection such as parasites or a more serious condition such as pancreatitis or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. She will be examined and assessed for contributing problems such as dehydration. From there, diagnostics and treatment can be discussed. I hope this information helps!
