My dog ate trash and chocolate, now has weird poop. Is he poisoned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 45 lbs

My new dog is amazing! But we left him home thinking he would be okay. We learned he can jump baby gates quite well! He hopped over the one that blocks our kitchen and ate raw old chicken from the trash, chocolate cup cakes and god only knows what else. I've been keeping a very close on on him, and he hasn't been acting out of the ordinary, and seems to be well. The only thing I've noticed is a very funky looking poop! I hope he's well and not poinsoned. What do you think of this poop? Vet time?

Hello and thanks for your post! Getting into the garbage is concerning as eating a bunch of garbage human food can cause GI upset as well as pancreatitis, but I am more concerned with the chocolate cupcake ingestion. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs based on how much they ate and what type of chocolate was used in the cupcakes. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, panting, pacing, heavy breathing, and seizures. It would be helpful to know how many cupcakes where eaten to better inform you on what to do, but continue to keep an eye on him and monitor him for any concerning signs mentioned above. If you see any, take him into an emergency veterinary clinic right away. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and best of luck!
