My cat's anal glands keep acting up. What's causing it and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

My cat had an abscess on her left anal gland and needed surgery to lance it . About 10 days later, the right one was impacted but burst on its own. One week later she needed them expressed and it was normal fluid. Now a week later she is exhibiting the same behavior that signaled the problem in the first place. ( tenderness at her tail, irritability, hissing, biting) What do I do now?

I would recommend having her rechecked by your vet. If it is truly another issue with her anal glands, she may need to have them cultured to check for a resistant strain of bacteria. There are also a few things that can cause recurring anal gland issues, including allergies, diarrhea or constipation, obesity, cancer, among a few others. Frequent expression of the glands can help with the impaction that leads to the abscessation. Anal glands can be surgically removed if this becomes a recurring issue.
