My dog has dry, crusty, weeping scabs on his neck. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Noticed some hard lumps around my dogs neck. Thought at first he may have ticks. On closer examination they appear to be dry, crusty, weeping lesions (like scabs). He has 2 on the side of his neck and 1 on the back of his neck. He doesn't appear to be in any pain or discomfort. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Without pictures it is difficult to say but my first suspicion would be a bacterial skin infection. I would suggest starting a shampoo such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. If no improvement or the infection worsens, I would get him seen by your vet for further testing and treatment. I would also recommend omega 3 fish oil such as welactin and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.
