My puppy is coughing like he's choking. Is it kennel cough or just a cold?

My puppy keeps coughing and sounds like he is choking. Our guess is he has kennel cough. When is it necessary to take him to the vet? Isn't it like a cold? Can he fight it off myself? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 8 days old | 30 lbs

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While it is possible this is not kennel cough, it should be investigated. Dogs can get all types of bacterial & viral respiratory infections that if left untreated can become bronchitis, or worse, pneumonia. Treating early can prevent this, make Toby Bear feel better, & give you some peace from the persistent coughing. I hope you can have him seen soon. Take care.
