My puppy runs away with things she shouldn't. How to make her drop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 26 days old | 30 lbs

My puppy is really good at drop it and will do so when we tell her to at a close range. But when she has something in her mouth she knows she shouldn't, she keeps her distance from us. When we tell her to come she'll come and when we reach our hand out to say leave it, she'll bolt away so she doesn't have to hear it! I find it hilarious but how do I get her to listen in that specific situation? she's smart and knows the commands but chooses not to obey in this specific situation

The best way is to trade her for something better. A high value treat, like a piece of hot dog, or a toy she loves. Basically when you give her something she can have she gets praised for dropping what she can't have. Tell her drop it again and good girl when she does. Good luck and kisses to Koi!
