Is 500mg Trazodone too much for a 62lb dog before a vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 62 lbs

I'm taking my dog to the vet tomorrow and they recommend giving him 5 100mg tablets of trazadone?!? That seems like alot....he is a boxer mix and weighs 62 lbs.

HI, I think there may have been some mistake in the dosage they told you to give. Trazadone is usually dosed in 100mg pills and large dogs are given up to 200mg about 2 hours before the vet visit to calm him down. I would hesitate to give him more than that. I would start with 200mg and speak to your vet again to make sure the dosage they want to give him is actually 5 tablets and what their reasoning would be. It is important to give the drug enough time to work which usually peaks in about 2 hours so if you do that, 200mg should work fine. Good luck I hope this helps!
