Can a hot chocolate stain on the carpet harm my cat if she licks it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I blotched as much as I could now I have the bedside table over the wet spots to dry that I possibly missed, of hot coco but I don't have a carpet cleaner, so can a hot chocolate stain hurt my cat after it's absorbed in the carpet? :( I can pick up a rug cleaner tomorrow or day after but what about if its dried and stained by then can the stain hurt her?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your mishap. Chocolate intoxication is mostly a problem seen in dogs instead of cats. I don't think you will have any problem with your cat after reading your question. Sounds like you have cleaned up the spill as much as possible and it's likely that your cat won't even be drawn to that area. Even with a dog, I think you would be safe in this situation. Sweetened chocolate is not as toxic as unsweetened baking chocolate regarding pet ingestion. I hope this helps and good luck with the carpet clean up.
