Why is my dog still scratching after flea treatment and no fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

I brought a retriever mix home from the pound a few weeks ago, and immediately put her on Advantage Multi. She was still scratching after 3 weeks so I administered another dose. No change. She is not infested or anything like that, but the scratching and biting continued. I sprayed the yard with pest killer, and upgraded to Nexgard which I gave a few days ago. Still scratching. What is the next step?? Thanks!!

Hi and thanks for your post this morning on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes dog will continue to itch when the fleas die off, so this may be what is happening. However, if another few weeks go by and she is still itching, then I would be suspicious of another environmental allergy like weeds, pollen, or grass or a food allergy. It also may be skin mites which can cause intense itching. I would have Bailey checked out by her veterinarian soon if the itching does not resolve. A few skin tests may be done to help differentiate the cause. A soothing shampoo with oatmeal and aloe can help the itching. I hope this helps and best to you and Bailey!
