Why is my Shih Tzu coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and spitting mucus?

My 6 year old shih tzu dog keeps sneezing,coughing and wheezing! Earlier today she coughed up mucus but that was it! It seems like she has something in her throat or her nose! What could this be and how can I help her? Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old

HI and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes infectious (such as kennel cough) if not up to date on this vaccine, collapsing trachea (if the cough sounded like a goose honk), certain lung disease and heart disease can all be causes. I would take her into her veterinarian soon if this continues any further. She will need an exam and perhaps a couple chest x-rays to determine if there is a heart of lung issue. Until you see a vet, use a harness instead of a collar, and a humidifier can help as well. I hope Chloe gets well soon!
