My dog has a growing, changing lump on his nose. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 8 months and 14 days old

A lump has appeared on my dogs nose, he doesn't seem to be in any pain nor any abrasion that I can see, it popped up two days ago and seems to be gradually enlarging not profoundly though. I was wondering if this should be of any concern, at first it was just a light pink and is now a little bit darker within, I can't see any puncture holes so not sure whether a bite or not but definitely is not bothered, over all seems fairly normal.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! A lot of skin masses can look the same. Possible causes are trauma, an infection, or a mass. Masses can be benign or malignant. Based on Tua's young age, I would assume if it was a mass it would be benign. A common benign pink, hairless growth in dogs is a histiocytoma. They usually spontaneously regress with in 1-3 months. Another possibility is a mast cell tumor which is a cancerous skin growth. Since is continuing to grow and changing I recommend you have your Vet take a look. They can discuss options for diagnosis. With it being on his nose it will be hard to aspirate it without him sedated. I hope this helps and I wish you and Tua the best!
