I just took my dog outside and noticed she had two big patches on the top backs of her legs that are black and crusty. She's been acting fine, nervous as we're in the middle of a hurricane currently, but no other symptoms

The dark color and hair loss indicates that the skin has been irritated or rubbed-on for quite a while. This is commonly seen in older dogs and is essentially just a callus. This can also be seen with dogs that have long-standing flea infestations, so it's worth checking and treating for fleas if that hasn't been done in a while. Otherwise, this is nothing to be concerned about for now. I hope that helps and you all get through the hurricane OK.

Hi there and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to say what the cause of the black and crusty area on Nala are without examining her first. It is hard to see from the picture. However, I can offer some possibilities. A yeast, fungal, or bacterial infection are all possibilities. Skin mites may also be possible as well. Your veterinarian will diagnosis with a skin test to determine what the cause is. Until then, you can keep the area clean with soap and water or a mild cleansing cloth. If it persists and does not go away, I would see your veterinarian. I hope this helps and best of luck to you!
