My unspayed dog wet herself with clear fluid, not pee. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 65 lbs

Last night, my dog (pit) wet herself, it didn't smell or look like pee and it startled her. She jumped up and sniffed at herself. It was quite a bit of fluid, and looked like water. She hasn't been drinking any more water than usual. She hasn't been spayed but is up to date with shots if either of those pieces of information makes a difference. I'm relatively concerned, our normal vet is closed at the moment, and I would like to know if there's anything I can do as of right now.

The fluid could either be urine or discharge from her uterus. I would recommend keeping a close eye on Willow and monitor for any other changes, like decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, and have her checked out when your vet is next available. Possible causes of the fluid include urinary tract infection, uterine infection, start of her heat cycle, among a few other things.
