Is it safe to crush Pepcid tablets for my cat's IV in renal failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Bobtail | Female | 10 lbs

My cat is in renal failure and is currently receiving an IV ringer solution daily. I also administer 10 mg of Pepcid by adding liquid solution of Pepcid to the IV bag. I am having trouble finding a place to buy the liquid Pepcid and was wondering if I can use solid Pepcid tablets by crushing them up and dissolving them into the IV solution. Is that ok to do as long I use the same mg dosage?

I would not recommend this - the tablets could cause irritation if given subcutaneously, or could lead to infection. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about where to purchase injectable Pepcid (also called famotidine). Your veterinarian may be able to order a bottle for you, or may recommend trying to give the medication orally.
