My 14 year old collie cross has a lump the size of a hazlenut on his rear left leg. It is firm to the touch but moves freely underneath the skin. What could this be please

Hi thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would recommend having Rex evaluated by a veterinarian. The vet may want to do a needle aspirate, which is sticking a small gauge needle into the mass to get a few cells to examine microscopically; which may give a better indication of what this is. From there biopsy or excision maybe recommended or just monitoring it. A mass on a dogs leg can be anything from an ilenlargrf lymph node, abscess, cancer or benign tumor. The only way to know for sure is with a vet visit and some diagnostic testing.
