My dog is coughing forcefully, sounds like choking. Is it serious?

My dog started coughing... I guess but she sounds likes she choking. Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If her gums/tongue are pink and not blue or purple she's probably not choking. They can forcefully cough like something is stuck for many reasons- kennel cough, heart disease, bronchitis, parasites are just a few. If she's blue or purple I would see a vet ASAP. If not, i would see a vet soon for an exam and possible radiographs to determine the cause and severity of the cough. Please don't give any over the counter medications until you talk to your vet.
