My cat has a red, swollen eyelid. Is it a sty? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 2 months old | 13 lbs

My cat developed a red spot on her upper eyelid yesterday. It looked like a scratch. Today it is slightly saloon, no drainage. Could it be a sty? Do I need to take her to the vet immediately?

Stys don't usually start out like a scratch. I would keep an eye on it for another 24 hours. If it continues to get more swollen, if there is discharge, or if Hickory is squinting or rubbing her eye, then I would have it checked out by a vet to see what could be going on.
