How often should I bathe my dog, especially if he gets really dirty?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 29 days old | 21.8 lbs

How often should you bathe your pup/dog? So far I've only bathed him once and that was due to him rolling in his poop.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Even though you could potentially bathe him once monthly, this is generally not needed and you could do it every other month. You could consider waterless shampoo which you can get at your local pet store. This allows you to bathe him without the use of water at times that he gets dirty like that in between regular baths. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A typical dog doesn't need a bath more frequently than every 2-4 weeks. Please use a dog approved shampoo and take care not to get any in his eyes. I hope this is helpful!

Great question! Unless your dogs get very dirty, you do not have to bathe them more than once a month. You can go longer than that if they are clean. I don't bathe my dogs regularly, typically only when they are dirty. I hope this helps!
