My dog has ticks, nothing works. Need affordable tick treatments?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 17 lbs

My dog caught ticks from another dog and I've tried many products to get rid of them but nothing has worked and if anything, they've multiplied. I'm in a bit of a financial crisis and can't afford a vet at the moment but I was wondering if maybe there were other products I could use.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Leo is having a tick problem. Tick protection is important because depending on where you live, Ticks can transmit many devastating tick borne diseases. There are many products out there including topicals and a few collars. Some of these products will require a veterinary prescription and some are over the counter (OTC). Topical products include Frontline Plus, Advantix, Vectra 3D, Effitix, Activyl, Paradefense, etc. There are some oral medicines out also called Bravecto and Nexgard. The two collars out there that work are Preventic and Seresto. I would advise calling your vet to at least discuss what they recommend in your area and go from there. From a cost standpoint, the Seresto collar (fleas/ticks, 8 months of coverage, waterproof) is probably the most affordable. You can look online for purchasing options. Good luck and I hope this helps.
